Owen Dean

Virginia High School senior Owen Dean has been selected as the school’s nominee for the Gene “Pappy” Thompson Award for Excellence, an honor that recognizes outstanding student‑athletes who exemplify excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

The award, named for the longtime Bristol sports journalist who spent decades highlighting not only athletic success but personal character, celebrates students who reflect leadership, resilience, and service. According to Virginia High School Principal Roland Wayne Price, Owen embodies that legacy.

“As I reflect on the legacy of Mr. Thompson—a man who valued character as much as competition—I can think of no student‑athlete who better meets those standards than Owen,” Price wrote in his nomination letter.

A standout at Virginia High School, Owen has built an impressive athletic résumé while demonstrating perseverance through adversity. A four‑year varsity soccer player and three‑year team captain, he earned First Team All‑District honors each year of his high school career and was named Team MVP and Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. Beyond individual awards, Owen has been widely respected for his leadership, particularly after playing through significant injury for two seasons, remaining committed to his teammates while diligently completing physical therapy.

Owen’s athletic contributions extend well beyond the soccer field. He competed in varsity football as a kicker and punter, earning Second Team All‑District honors multiple seasons, and also played varsity golf, where he was recognized as the team’s Most Improved Golfer. His versatility and willingness to serve wherever needed have defined his athletic career.

In the classroom, Owen has matched his athletic success with academic excellence. He currently ranks second in a class of 151 students with a 4.44 cumulative GPA and is on track to graduate with 60 college credits. His academic honors include the Golden V Award, recognition as a WCYB Scholar Athlete of the Week, and leadership awards from both the College of William & Mary and the Harry Byrd Leadership program. He has also earned ProStart culinary certification and Microsoft Office Specialist Expert certifications.

“Owen seeks to master every subject he encounters,” Price noted. “From advanced coursework to industry certifications, he approaches academics with discipline and determination.”

Equally important to the Gene “Pappy” Thompson Award criteria is service beyond school grounds, an area where Owen has been deeply involved. Through Virginia High School’s Citizens in Action Program, he has completed more than 100 hours of community service. His involvement includes leadership roles in the National Honor Society and Beta Club, participation in the school Spirit Squad, and work as a referee for the Bristol Soccer Association.

Whether mentoring younger athletes, representing his school at events, or volunteering in the community, Owen has consistently demonstrated integrity and a commitment to others—traits Thompson famously admired in the athletes he covered.

Adding to his diverse skill set, Owen captured first place in the Tennessee CareerQuest Culinary Challenge, highlighting both creativity and focus outside of athletics. His success across academics, athletics, leadership, and service reflects a well‑rounded student prepared for future challenges.

“Virginia High School is proud to nominate Owen Dean for this prestigious honor,” Price wrote. “He possesses not only the athletic skill required for this award, but the heart of a servant and the fortitude of a leader.”

The Gene “Pappy” Thompson Award winner will be announced later this year. Regardless of the outcome, Owen Dean’s accomplishments have already left a lasting mark on Virginia High School and the Bristol community.

Congratulations, Owen!
