Virginia High School is proud to announce David “Owen” Dean as our 2026 nominee for the prestigious Gene “Pappy” Thompson Award. On the field, Owen is a versatile and commanding presence. His athletic resume at Virginia High School is defined by both talent and an unwillingness to give up. While playing through an injury as a kicker for the Bearcat football program, he learned to kick with the opposite foot, connecting on several extra points. Rather than stepping aside, he demonstrated immense discipline by working tirelessly, supporting his team, and representing our school.
His statistics and accolades are a direct result of that grit:
Owen’s contributions as an All-District Kicker and Punter on the football team and his recognition as Most Improved in golf showcase his ability to adapt and willingness to compete where needed. As a four-year varsity player and three-year Team Captain on the soccer team, Owen has earned First Team All-District honors every year of his career and All-Region. He has been recognized as Team MVP and Offensive Player of the Year and has been a member of the Tri-Cities United Premier Soccer Team.
In the classroom, Owen has maintained a 4.44 GPA while ranking 2nd in a class of 151, and by graduation, he will have amassed 60 college credits. His academic accolades include the Golden V Award, the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and his status as a WCYB Scholar Athlete of the Week. He is a scholar who seeks to master every subject, from Advanced Placement courses to earning Microsoft Office Specialist Expert and ProStart Certification. He also played a role in our Culinary Arts department, as they won the Tennessee CareerQuest Culinary Challenge this year, demonstrating his versatility.
Gene Thompson valued success off the field, and Owen lives this daily. Through the VHS Citizens in Action Program, Owen has contributed over 100 hours of community service. Whether he is representing our school in the Spirit Squad or working as a Referee for the Bristol Soccer Association, he conducts himself with the integrity and mentorship that “Pappy” Thompson admired.
Congratulations, Owen!
