36 minutes after 4 Stevens Restaurant the Asheville School last year with mrs. Mason District and mr. map before that it was this is nice and it's done you can't believe you did it when you're done I was thinking about how do I introduce work and power to you guys this was the first thing that popped into my mind because it was one of the most strenuous hardest difficulty can I use a lot of power in that race so let's talk about the first one that start with what is work and I have a little video dear Tim and Moby how do you measure work from shark work is effort or force exerted over a certain distance Force makes an object move in a direction parallel to that Force work is done okay say I throw this ball to you forward force on the ball then that's the way the ball moves and motions positive work is done on the ball when will be stop the ball by catching it force and Direction opposite from the balls motion so he did negative work on the ball oh no it's not a bad thing force is measured in units called Newtons abbreviated in and work is measured in units called joules abbreviated J work is done when a force of 1 Newtons is exerted over a distance of 1 m it takes about 50 Newtons to push this lawn mower that's a total of 50000 joules of work so what's that mower how many newtons of force are you using okay 500 and your listing in about 2 meters in the air 1000 joules of work you know I did 50,000 joules of work mowing this lawn I couldn't listen more because my work was spread out over a much longer distance to push the mower you can do the same amount of physical work over a longer distance with less effort or Force basic concept behind simple machines like levers and pulleys spread workout over a longer distance so they decrease the amount of force you need to do the work on the force applied to an object moves in the direction the force is applied right now what's an orange on your notes so how do we find work equals force times distance and we can see that here force times distance and make sure you write this down your notes also is Jules sounds like Jewels like the jewels you wear j w l a s o u l e s it's who figured out how we measure work so we can put this in one of our little pyramids in dollars $4 if you can get this then you can only figure out what you can figure out force and you can find distance let's do some practice overweight 6 over his head how much did he do so we need to find out how much work he did so remember when we distance I do that here so what equals force x do that week at work equals our Force 1000 our distance is 6 Gators work equals 6000 turn on juice. How much work does she do again force times distance Sarah work equals force times distance sequels are substitution is 5500 Newtons so work 100 * 20 which would be 10 we can now talk about what power is they called dumbbells I guess I walked dear Tim and Moby what is power in science I mean from Vanessa Arcanine a lot of things text Powers a measure of how quickly what is done in science simple words like power and work have different meanings than they do an ordinary language power work and force are different ways of measuring the energy needed to make an object move force of any action that can make an object accelerate is measured in units called Newtons different kinds of force just wait to movie I'm exerting a force on it have you heard of gravity the force that pulls stuff out of the ground remember work is done only while the object is actually moving exactly work on it even though gravity still acting on the weight now no work is being done on it because it's not moving work is measured in units called joules by the way what is the energy of one newton of force acting over a distance of 1 meter you're doing work I just holding it there you're not I know it feels like you are power is one step further this how fast work is done Sancerre language power is the rate at which work is performed to carry all these weights upstairs I don't know why did you just do let's say it takes 20 joules of work to move these weights upstairs Define empowering for divide the amount of work by the time it takes you to do it the basic unit of power is the watt which is defined as 1 Joule of work per second so let's just say it takes you 10 seconds to carry the weights upstairs you're doing 20 joules of work in 10 seconds is 2 watts of power now what's the movie wants to carry the weights of stairs again but this time he's in a hurry to get it done it doesn't 5 Seconds of work because of Weights are moving the same distance but he produced for wants a power because he did the same work in only 5 Seconds moving away faster produces more power come on out power is the rate at which work is done is how fast so make sure so now let's use that to solve word problems formula for power is work divided by time and the unit is Watts now the easiest way to remember our pyramid for the is work to help you remember and set these questions let's look at these were problems it still moves the White 2 seconds how much power so what we need to do is we need to figure out how much power so cover up power power equals work divided by time power work divided by time in the problem before we realized 6000 joules of work so let's go power equals 6000 artana to seconds so 6000 divided by 2 is 3000 the lawn mower and 30 seconds how much power did she have the work she did was so power equals work divided by time power equals 10,000 joules / 30 seconds soap power equals 333.3 now that you've done that you need to glue that into your notebook where we put in the table of contents where your work and power density include those in now and then what you're going to do what you're going to get the practice packet from me now the practice packet looks like this so what I want you to do is I want you to go ahead and what is an then get this packet make sure you do not lose packet in yet but make sure you put work $4 and work pays taxes on the front that will help you you also to fix at the bottom it says distance equals work over time that's not the one you're going to want you going to want distance equals work divided by force make sure that you fixed at on that worksheet it was a typo once you've done that you wouldn't want to start working these problems so let me show you how to do this and then I'll let you go from there so first of all you're going to tell me correct information so let's do that the formula for work is work equals force times distance next the formula for power is power divided by time Define the four she must have thought the work by the distance find the distance Chabad work by force Define power you must divide work by time is measured in years work is measured in joules power is measured in watts so get all those kind of just like the introduction stuff then what you're going to do is you're going to find the formula and substitute your values and then solve for the equation so you might not be used to doing this I wanted to do the first one with you so the force in the disc we want to do the work so the formula is work equals force times distance next what you're going to do is you're going to substitute you going to substitute 120 newton for distance you're going to substitute to meters so it looks like this multiply 120 * 2 gives us 240 Jewel so that's what I want you to do with the neck questions I want you to break this up and I want you now to do number two and number three do those and then come up to my desk and get them checked if you get those right then you're going to what do at this next page can you do all of this all of this once you are done with that check it with me if you get it right then can move on to that final page but you need to have each page check body before you move on because I want to make sure you're understanding this because we're going to use this tomorrow Tiffany work so get to work again habitat by me
