so to start our weather unit off we're going to talk about the difference between weather and climate cuz these are two things that a lot of people mistake so just to get a job. I just want you to watch video if you don't like me you know what your perfect day looks like weather wise funny raining snowing whatever when it's cool and cloudy like just cold enough for a sweater really there's a lot more to it than just temperature grab your sunglasses your rain boots in your most colorful scarf because today question what exactly is weather weather is the condition of the air or the atmosphere on our planet but the thing is even though there's only one atmosphere on Earth the weather isn't the same all over the world there are many different factors that can change the atmosphere in a certain area and together they determine what the weather it's like from 1 minute and from one place to the next vs factors include temperature humidity wind speed and direction and lots of other things but from a certain region of the world you're talking about the area's climate weather is the minute by minute changes in the atmosphere is what the weather is like over a long. Of time in a specific area weather is constantly changing all the time everyday think of the weather as being like that one friend of yours you can never make up their mind about what movie they want to see or what restaurant they want to go to Umbrella before the day's over and winning is just one of the things that weather can do rain of course is just a form of precipitation or water that falls from the sky in the clouds or sometimes ice crystals warm air near the ground will melt them as they fall for me raindrops but another common form of precipitation is snow ice crystals that don't melt into liquid water as they fall asleep if what happens when ice crystals fall for the ground partly melt and then refreeze again what other kind of weather can be way more severe in the most common kind of extreme weather is a form of I'm sure you're familiar with thunderstorms happens when strong winds make drops of water and pieces of ice color break apart inside a storm this causes electrical energy to build up which we can change in a few hours or Region's climate hundreds thousands millions of years to change how can we better understand the difference between weather and climate how about we send cartoon Sabrina on a little imaginary trip for a month okay here she is at her destination Yuma Arizona pretend it's the 5th of the month on this particular day where cartoon Sabrina is it's warm but very cloudy and light rain has been falling on her sorry me all day it's clouds and rain or what the atmosphere offer on this particular spot at this moment and they can go with any minutes those conditions are the weather be needing an umbrella today how about the 15th XX still sunny 25th you guessed it sunny with a Chance of well Sonny and finally on the 30th the sun still shining little Sabrina I hope you packed your sunscreen so what does a split time lapse of a month in Umatilla tell us that Yuma Arizona is a pretty sunny place in fact on most days it's one of the sunniest cities on the whole planet so the city's weather patterns existed before Mini-Me arrived and will continue you after she leaves. You can say that you might have a sunny climate even if it's weather on a certain day happens to be raining it's constantly changing you also know that weather climate are not the same thing but I saved the extreme stuff for last year weather stuff that is now that we got a general idea let's get down weather and climate so weather describes the condition of the air Outdoors such as temperature cloud cover wind speed and rainfall like she said the video it's a moment-to-moment change so here's an example and I would strongly encourage you to color this but this is an example of something of the weather going here you have a low pressure system needing a high pressure system which is causing some where are some precipitation that weather here's a picture of that weather coming okay so here's a big storm cloud giving us some precipitation here is a weather map low and high pressure systems coming in and going to talk about later in this unit so some examples of weather are condensation which is the cooling off of water in the atmosphere changing gas to a liquid Haitian water droplets fall from the atmosphere in the form of rain sleet snow or hail Mindy is the amount of water vapor in the air so here's an example of humidity you can tell Misty this is an example of humidity we're at condensation would actually be the rain falling down window so H with a circle as a high pressure and it equals hot dry air l in a blue circle is low pressure cool what are this is a cold front a warm front thunderstorms cloudy sunny cloudy rain and snow and again we will be talking about these weather symbols more when we talked about how what are the things that plays into whether or are seasons because precipitation will come in different forms Seasons winter spring summer fall extreme weather that we will talk about we get to that section of the unit as in tornadoes now it's climate is the average or typical weather condition of a region year after year at least season so it's the average it happens over time so the average if you look here to determine climate over time look at precipitation and it measures temperature and here is an example of a consonant you can see on average average temperatures two things that affect climate and elevation when ocean currents closest to the equator Nearness of and gases Natsu search for instance if you look at the Inquirer the area is here have a pretty steady climate of warm and wet so now what I want you to do on the back of the notes I want you to tell me whether the picture is an example of weather or climate you don't have to say what weather climate this is weather because it's a day today forecast again weather because Sunshine is a condition of the air Outdoors number three this is climb because it shows the averages of temperatures over time this is climate because a drought is conditions of a region over a season or years this is climate because it shows the temperatures over a year in Las Vegas so you're looking over an extended. look at the rain is it one day or is it over many many many days this would be weather because of the storm lightning is part of the storm this is climate because it shows a trend or average of weather in an area over time this is weather this is weather because again lightning is edition of hair Outdoors again weather because I schools are in mission of the air Outdoors this is climate because it shows an average over time weather snow Monday weather rainbows condition of the air Outdoors careful get our time range so this is climate because it shows a long time weather weather this picture shows weather because the symbols are descriptions of conditions of the air Outdoors extended amount of time it's just showing you what it would look like in different moments so this is what weather now what I want you to do is I want you on your Venn diagram to compare and contrast weather and climate once you have that done turn it into the assignment tray and you can start working on your ueg
