it's freezing out here RJ I can see my breath it has been pretty cold look even the puddles are freezing over yeah that'll of the states of matter where are the states of matter solids liquids and gases when things freeze what would you say if I could tell you exactly how cool that pedal needs to be to turn from liquid to solid I'd say jam on Zoe okay so matter is anything that takes up space as a solid liquid or gas the state of that matter solid liquid or gas depends on how fast the molecules move think of them as 10 players on a team team is water today which will start with gas gas is the state of matter where molecules catastic like super crazy all over the place past what makes a move so fast when we see the water as a gas anywhere and everywhere can go to Coach if you could those molecules down they'll move a bit slower taking nothing away and those molecules are we close enough together to become a liquid II state of matter exactly how close how to get to turn into a liquid liquid soup when the molecules get cold enough and close enough together they turn from a gas to a liquid yep and when gas turns to liquid is called sensation just now that means freeze this is called the freezing point how much room to move your present together when water freezes and becomes a solid state of matter solids are hard and don't change shape because their molecules of stop moving around sounds sort of trouble will just add some heat and it's easy to change sell it back to a liquid and let's get this solid fired up when the temperature rises above 32 degrees Fahrenheit ice melts into a liquid melting point get to crank the heat up even more and send those molecules into a frenzy and from a liquid to gas and that's called operation liquid to gas evaporation there they go as far as they can all right let me run through this tell me if I got it right there three states of matter solid liquid and gas adding heat or taking it away can change matter from one state to another when matter changes its state it's really the movement of the molecules speeding up or slowing down I do say I'm dressed I think you just gave me an idea for a play to use it tomorrow all of my players running all sorts of crazy directions as far as they can totally confusing the other don't you know the Event Horizon today we're going to talk about matter water that you drink for lunch yesterday even the air around you the 4th is actually more than four states of matter so the states of matter are based on the energy of the particles in the distance between particles this is all based on the kinetic theory which particle motion moving ramp just talked about the first state of matter solids particles that are tightly packed and they vibrate around a fixed position so they're just going to move very very slightly slightly that we cannot see it with our naked eye they are moving don't have a definite shape and a definite volume so definitely not change it so the shape of a solid will not change it pencil pencil and have a definite volume another word it's not going to change to a solid another liquids have a definite shape and definite volume if I have a milk into a tall glass the shape of the milk volume of a liquid in a bowl still have 20 liquid return it to a gas because of this they have indefinite shape and definite volume depending on what you put the gas in its shape because when you can dance it might start Sears in Natick what if we add so we talked about that in just a second but let's talk first about when we talk about stranger probably really familiar with a solid to a liquid to a water order to get something to mail into the sun let's take a puddle of water let's make it really really really cold and it's going to go a liquid if it goes from a liquid to a gas station she said she's really hot touches that cool that water vapor turning it back to liquid station outside your glasses what we're talking about get that liquid face. never play with dry ice what happens if you raise the temperature to super hot electricity to the gas electricity in why do gases have a definite shape indefinite volume is one of our common states of matter examples of plasma the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights is a star and its plasma States next we need to go over the phase change chart and what you need to realize with the phase change chart even though you're adding heat to something doesn't mean that the temperature if we increase typically the temperature as nothing will grow up the temperature Flatline does particles are Titans increase the heat energy energy is going to go into changing when the temperature will start rising in the temperature will rise and rise and Rise until you get to this point which is the boiling point which is vaporization the temperature again Flatline so we're going from a liquid to a gas so our temperature does not change liquid the temperature will start changing your temperature does not she is going into changing the price of the matter how to go from there I think about a glass of iced tea on a hot summer day that water vapor that in the air it's going to cool down that water vapor and you'll see condensation on the app side of your glass so the temperature does not change its only when it's completely a liquid that the temperature liquid will start to go down again until you hit the freezing point so want the temperature gets to a certain point that liquid will start to turn to a solid start to freeze once it's completely at solid go straight to go down again so the big take away from this temperature the right this the right beside the right below that patient's chart how do you change your going to hopefully have a good idea on our four basic
