Cancellation of School & Snow Schedule Procedures
Cancellation of school takes place due to extreme weather conditions, equipment failure, public crisis, or other unforeseen emergencies.
BVPS has established a School System Information Line to announce weather-related school closings and schedule modifications: 276-821-5999. The information line will be updated first, and then media services (radio, TV, Internet) will be contacted to announce changes in the school schedule. Please call this information line regarding weather related closings, rather than the school, since the school will also receive its information from this source. Please discuss with your child what he/she should do in case school is dismissed during normal school hours.
At BVPS our number one priority is the safety of all our students. When inclement weather occurs, schedule change decisions are taken very seriously. When snow is falling, or when we know ice and snow are already on the roads, streets are inspected and then decisions are made about the day's schedule. It is our intent to announce schedule changes to all media outlets by 6 a.m. A snow schedule is often used to allow city crews the opportunity to clear roads. If conditions worsen, a decision to cancel school will be made. Please do not depend on a single source for information, as it often takes several minutes for schedule changes to be posted.
Weather conditions can change rapidly and BVPS realizes that when road conditions are clear in some areas of the city, conditions may be different on your street.
As soon as decisions are made concerning snow schedules or school closings (including during the day if schools are closed early), information will be given to the following for public announcements:
- Bristol Virginia Public School App (This can be downloaded for free from Google Play and Apple App Store)
- BVPS Information Line 276-821-5999
- BVPS Facebook Page
- Twitter @BristolSuper, @BVPSDistrict
- WCYB-TV, WJHL-TV, WCQR-FM, WXBQ-AM/FM, WQUT-FM, and WZAP
Please keep your television or radio tuned to one of these stations on days of threatening weather. Because of our communication procedures, announcements are often "on air" as soon as, or before, messages get to the schools. In addition, the school-system Weather Info Line telephone number is 276-821-5999 and the school-system website is www.bvps.org
The cooperation of parents, students and staff is important when schedules are altered in order for students to be provided optimal learning opportunities.
