Week 1 - August 24 - 28, 2020

Monday, August 24, 2020 - We will begin learning about Narrative Nonfiction text today.  1) Watch the video introducing Narrative Nonfiction.  2)  Go to Vocabulary A-Z and learn our new vocabulary words by watching the word videos and doing the word study.  You may also choose to do one more activity with the vocabulary words.  3)  Listen to the read aloud of Ivan The Remarkable Shopping Mall Gorilla.  We will also begin working on sequencing so 4) you will watch the sequencing video #1 as an introduction to sequencing.  5)  Do Sequence scoot #1 where you will read some short passages and answer questions about the order in which events happened.

 

Tuesday, August 25, 2020 - 1) Rewatch the read aloud of Ivan The Remarkable Shopping Mall Gorilla.  2) Take the comprehension quiz on Ivan.  3)  Watch the complete sentence/fragments video.  4)  Do the complete sentence/fragments practice.  5)  Go to Vocabulary A-Z and do 2 more activities with the vocabulary.

Week 2 - August 31 - September 4, 2020

Monday, August 31, 2020 - 1) Watch the Read Aloud of Henry's Freedom Box.  2)  Put the events from the story into the correct sequence.  3)  Answer the comprehension questions about the story.  4)  Rewatch Henry's Freedom Box and write down compound words that you see as you are looking at the words and listening to the story.  Type at least 7 compound words from the story.

 

Tuesday, September 1, 2020 - 1)  Watch the Read Aloud for Scott Kelly's Journey to the Stars.  2)   Go to Vocabulary A-Z and learn our new vocabulary words for Scott Kelly's Journey to the Stars by watching the word videos and doing the word study.  You may also choose to do one more activity with the vocabulary words.  3)  Watch the video teaching you about syllables.  4) Do the syllables practice activity.

 

Wednesday, September 2, 2020 - 1)  Go to Vocabulary A-Z and do 2 more activities with the vocabulary from Scott Kelly's Journey to the Stars.  2)  Watch the video teaching you about context clues.  3)  Read the Space passages and use context clues to learn the meaning of new words and search the text for answers to questions from the passages.

 

Thursday, September 3, 2020 - 1)  Go to  Vocabulary A-Z and do Vocabulary Test Me.  2)  Then take the Scott Kelly's Journey to the Stars vocabulary quiz.  3)  Watch the read aloud for Turning Pages: My Life Story by Sonia Sotomayor.  4)  Watch the video explaining antonym context clues.  5)  Do the antonym context clues practice.

 

Friday, September 4, 2020 - 1) Rewatch the read aloud of Turning Pages: My Life Story by Sonia Sotomayor.  2)  Answer the questions from the story by taking the Turning Pages quiz.  3)  Capitalization and punctuation practice.

 

Week 3 September 7 - 11, 2020

This week we will begin reading realistic fiction stories.  We will continue to work on sequence and we will answer questions about what we have read.  We will learn about making predictions and we will learn about the two parts of all sentences, the subject and the predicate.  Enjoy and work hard!

Tuesday, September 8, 2020 - Watch the video on realistic fiction as a genre.  Then watch part 1 of  I Survived the Attacks of September 11 and answer the comprehension questions from part 1.  Watch the video on making predictions and then practice making predictions by reading a short paragraph and choosing what you think will most likely happen next.

 

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 - Watch part 2 of I Survived the Attacks of September 11 and then answer the comprehension questions from part 2.  Practice predicting by doing the practice, You Make the Call.  Read each passage and tell what you think will happen next.

 

Thursday, September 10, 2020 -  Watch part 3 of I Survived the Attacks of September 11 and then answer the comprehension questions from part 3.  Watch the 2 videos on complete sentences and subjects and predicates.  Then do subjects and predicates practice #1 where you will identify the subject or the predicate in a sentence.

 

Friday, September 11, 2020 - Watch the last part (part 4) of  I Survived the Attacks of September 11 and then answer the comprehension questions from part 4.  Read the passage Dear Diary  and then practice sequencing by identifying events that happen before or after other events.  Practice making sentences by combining subjects and predicates when you do the Making Sentences with Subjects and Predicates practice.

 
 
 

Week 4 September 14 - 18, 2020

We will continue reading realistic fiction this week.  We will learn to identify characters, setting, problems or conflicts and solutions or resolutions in our stories.  We will continue to practice sequencing and predicting.  We will also continue to practice identifying the subject and predicate in sentences.

 

Monday, September 14, 2020 - Click on Quizlet and learn our 8 new vocabulary words by looking at the flashcards and doing the learn activity.  Then listen to the read aloud of Destiny's Gift.  Watch the subject and predicate Powerpoint.  Do the subject and predicate practice #2.

 

Tuesday, September 15, 2020 - Go to Quizlet and practice matching your vocabulary words to their meaning with the Match game.  Then do the WRITE activity where you will write the vocabulary word for each meaning.  Listen to the read aloud of Destiny's Gift again.  Then answer the questions in Destiny's Gift Comprehension.  Watch Story Elements video #1.

 

Wednesday, September 16, 2020 - Take the vocabulary test in Quizlet.  Listen to Destiny's Gift for the 3rd time and play Destiny's Gift game.  Watch the video on What are Story Elements? and listen to the Story Elements song.  Then identify story elements from the stories we have read the past 4 weeks.

 

Thursday, September 17, 2020 - Do the Destiny's Gift Assessment.  Then do the Character, Setting, and Plot practice.  Finally read about Henry Hudson's life and put the events from his life into the correct order (sequence).  

 

Friday, September 18, 2020 - Finish any uncompleted work from the past 4 weeks.  Watch the 5 videos on writing a personal narrative including brainstorming, planning and prewriting, creating an introduction, and writing the first draft with a closing.  Then write a personal narrative that is 3 - 5 paragraphs long about an event from this summer.

This week we will be reading argumentative text.  We will learn about facts and opinions.  We wll identify the main idea and key details of passages.  We will also work with multiple meaning words.

 

Monday, September 21, 2020 - Watch the Brainpop video on Facts and Opinions.  Then listen to the read aloud of I Wanna Iguana.  Take the comprehension quiz on I Wanna Iguana.  Play the facts and opinions game.

 

Tuesday, September 22, 2020 - Watch the main idea and supporting details video.  Do Pirate's Life Summary.  Watch Dear Mr. Blueberry Read Aloud.

 

Wednesday, September 23, 2020 - Rewatch Dear Mr. Blueberry.  Do the crossword puzzle with questions from Dear Mr. Blueberry.  Watch the Brain Pop main idea video.  Practice identifying main idea with IXL main idea game.

 

Thursday, September 24, 2020 - Watch the multiple meaning words teaching video.  Do the multiple meaning words practice on IXL.  Take the multiple meaning words quiz.  Read The Storm passage and identify the main idea and the 3 supporting details.

 

Friday, September 25, 2020 - Watch the read aloud of Stella Writes an Opinion.  Then watch the Scholastic segment on Stella Writes an Opinion where the author explains why she wrote the story.  Click on the play button under the Watch the Video picture.  Then on a separate sheet of paper, make a list of possible things that you would like to write an opinion on.  Then list reasons for your opinion.  Think about a closing and then write an opinion essay.

 

WEEK 6 - September 28 - October 2, 2020

This week we will be reading nonfiction expository texts.  We will learn about why author's write a selection (author's purpose).  We will learn about homophones.  We will compare simple and compound sentences.

 

Monday, September 28, 2020   - Watch the Nonfiction Expository video and the nonfiction expository text features video.  Watch the homophones video.  Then watch the homophones with pictures video.  Watch the read aloud of What Do Illustrator's Do?.  Finally, read Outer Space and answer the questions about the nonfiction expository text.

 

 Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - Practice identifying homophones with IXL.  Watch the author's purpose video.  Then do the author's purpose quiz.

 

 Wednesday, September 30, 2020 - Take the homophones quiz.  Watch the simple and compound sentences video.  Rewatch the read aloud of What Do Illustrator's Do?  Play the Kahoot game on What Do Illustrator's Do? and answer questions about the story.

 

Thursday, October 1, 2020 - Watch the simple and compound video #2.  Do simple and compound sentences practice #1.  Do Author's Purpose passages where you will read 10 paragraphs and determine why the author wrote each passage.

 

Friday, October 2, 2020 - Watch the video on Expository Writing where it will be explained and you will see some examples of expository writing.  Then watch the video on how to write an expository essay.  Listen to the Expository Writing Song.  Then write an expository essay on what job you would like to do when you grow up and why that would be the best job for you.

 

 

 

 

 

Week 7  -  October 5 - 9, 2020

This week we will continue our study of expository nonfiction.  You will be learning about text features that are used to help you understand what you are reading.  We will also learn about the different kinds of nouns including singular and plural and common and proper.  You will identify these types of nouns as you read.  We will also identify the problem or conflict in a passage that we read.  Then we will see how the problem or conflict was solved or resolved.  

 

We have Fall Break starting with an early dismissal this Thursday, Oct. 8th.  We will be out of school this Friday, October 9th and next Monday, October 12th.  Enjoy your break!

 

Monday, October 5, 2020 - Listen to the read aloud of My Librarian is a Camel.  Watch the kinds of nouns teaching video and then the singular and plural nouns video.  Do the kinds of nouns practice.  Go to Vocabulary A-Z and practice vocabulary words from My Librarian is a Camel by doing the Flash Cards and Vocabulary Memory Match activities.

 

Tuesday, October 6, 2020 - Watch the Problem and Solution teaching video and the Problem and Solution video #2.  Watch the text features video.  Then practice identifying problems and solutions with the Problem and Solution practice.  Go to Vocabulary A-Z and practice vocabulary words from My Librarian is a Camel by watching word videos and then play Match It Definitions.

 

Wednesday, October 7, 2020 - Listen to the read aloud of My Librarian is a Camel once more.  Then take the vocabulary/comprehension test on the story.  Do the kinds of nouns quiz.

 

Thursday, October 8, 2020 - Listen to the read aloud of Nature's Green Umbrella.  Several text features will be explained as they are used throughout this text.  Take the text features quiz.  We do have an early dismissal today.

This week will be a review week and we will take our first Benchmark test assessing how well we are learning the concepts presented in our first 7 weeks together.  We will review sequence, text features, multisyllabic words, context clues, main idea and supporting details, predicting, answering questions about text, author's purpose, conflict and resolution and multiple meaning words.

Tuesday, October 13, 2020 - Watch Brain Pop's 4 types of sentences video.  Then watch the 4 types of sentences video.  Do the punctuation for all 4 kinds of sentences practice #1.  Do the Benchmark Review.

 

Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - Go to Clever and log in to practice taking a benchmark test (previous year's released test).  Practice using the tools such as highlighting, slashing the trash(incorrect answers) and other tools.

 

Thursday, October 15, 2020 - Take the CIP Benchmark #1 test.

 

Friday, October 16, 2020 - Write a personal narrative about a time that you experienced something spooky.

 

 

 

 

 

Week 9 - October 19 - 23, 2020

This week we will be reading a Historical Fiction novel.  You will learn to identify historical fiction.  You will also learn about cause and effect relationships and practice identifying the cause and the effect in situations.  You will review making predictions and learn about identifying the theme of a selection.  You will watch a video describing theme and then practice identifying theme.

 

Monday, October 19, 2020 - Watch the historical fiction video describing this genre.  Listen to the read aloud of chapters 1 & 2 of Sarah Plain and Tall.  Go to Vocabulary A -  Z and practice new vocabulary words by doing the flash cards and memory match.

 

Tuesday, October 20, 2020 - Watch the cause and effect teaching video.  Then listen to chapters 3 & 4 of Sarah Plain and Tall.  Take the Sarah #1 quiz.  Then do the cause and effect practice.  If you have extra time, go to Vocabulary A - Z and watch word videos and play match it definitions.

 

Wednesday, October 21, 2020 - Listen to chapters 5 & 6 of Sarah Plain and Tall.  Take the Sarah quiz #2.  Watch the Predictions video and then do Predicting Reading Passages #2.

Week 10 - October 26 - 30, 2020

We continue working on Historical Fiction this week.  We will be reading a selection called Pop's Bridge which details the building of the San Francisco Bay Bridge.  We will be working on identifying the author's point of view and determining who is the narrator of stories.  We will be working on prefixes this week, focusing on dis-, un-, re- and mis-.  We will also continue practicing our predicting skills.  Students will learn to combine compound sentences using a comma.  We will write about our traditions for Halloween.

 

Monday, October 26, 2020 - Watch the read aloud of Pop's Bridge.  Practice the vocabulary from the story on Vocabulary A-Z.  Watch the 1st and 3rd person point of view teaching video.  Watch the point of view video and practice.  Do the point of view practice #1.

 

Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - Rewatch the read aloud of Pop's Bridge.  Practice the vocabulary from the story on Vocabulary A-Z.  Watch the video on prefixes dis-, mis-, un-, and in-.  Then watch the prefixes video on un-, bi, dis- and re-.  Do the prefixes practice #1 on dis- and un-.

This week will be a review week and we will take our first Benchmark test assessing how well we are learning the concepts presented in our first 10 weeks together.  We will review sequence, text features, multisyllabic words, context clues, main idea and supporting details, predicting, answering questions about text, author's purpose, conflict and resolution and multiple meaning words.

 

Monday, November 2, 2020 -   Do the Benchmark Review.  We will also learn about guide words and practice using alphabetical order to determine which word would be on a dictionary page with given guide words.

Thursday, November 19, 2020 - Do the Into the Room Visualizing Activity.  Watch the video and practice visualizing.  Then read 3 passages and use visualization to answer questions about the text.

 

Friday, November 20, 2020 - Follow the directed draw video to draw a turkey.  Upload a picture of your completed turkey.  Then write an acrostic poem for TURKEY.

Tuesday, November 24, 2020 - Watch the read aloud of Molly's Pilgrim.  Answer comprehension questions about the story.  Practice using research skills by searching the internet and writing facts about Pilgrims.

Tuesday, December 1, 2020 - Practice summarizing using Monsters Summarizing.  Watch the abbreviations video and practice abbreviating words in the abbreviations #1 practice.

 

Wednesday, December 2, 2020 - Go over the verb tenses powerpoint.  Watch the video on future tense verbs.  Play Verbs in Space game.  Do the verb tenses practice.  Watch the author's purpose video #2 and take the author's purpose quiz.

 

Thursday, December 3, 2020 - Read Epic's Corpse Flower versus Venus Flytrap.  Read the Bye Bye Fly text and answer the questions on the information.

Tuesday, December 8, 2020 - Read Epic's Reindeer (nonfiction text).  Read No Reindeer Games Here:  Facts About Wild Caribou Adaptations and answer questions about the text.  Make a reindeer craft.

 

Wednesday, December 9, 2020 - Watch the main idea and details video #2.  Take the main idea and supporting details quiz.  Read Holiday Ornaments passage and answer questions about the passage.  Make a cinnamon ornament by following the directions in the text.

 

Thursday, December 10, 2020 - Listen to the How the Grinch Stole Christmas Read Aloud while drinking Grinch punch.  Read the theme song for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and identify the similes in the song.  Read a passage about the Grinch and replace words with antonyms.

 

Friday, December 11, 2020 - Watch the video on how to write an expository essay.  Interview a family member asking 2 questions about their favorite Christmas memory and song.  Then use the interview answers to write an essay about that person's favorite Christmas memories.

 

This week we will be preparing for Christmas and working on sequencing, captions, suffixes and answering questions from text.  Students will write a narrative passage.

Monday, December 14, 2020 - We will be learning about the suffixes -able, -ful, -less, and -ly by watching a teaching video and then practicing identifying those suffixes in words.  We will read about the history of the Christmas tree and answer questions about the passage.  Then we will make a wreath and include decorations with suffixes on them.

 

Tuesday, December 15, 2020 - Listen to the read aloud of The Snow Globe Family.  Write a 5 - 7 sentence paragraph of what it would be like to live in a snow globe.

 

Wednesday, December 16, 2020 - Watch The Nutcracker Ballet.  Then listen to the read aloud of The Nutcracker and put the events from the story into correct sequence.

 

Thursday, December 17, 2020 - Read A Home for Christmas and answer questions.  Watch Van Pelt teacher created Christmas videos.

 

Friday, December 18, 2020 - Watch The Legend of the Candy Cane read aloud.  Read and answer questions about candy canes and how they are made.

Week 17 - January 4 - 8, 2021

 

Happy New Year!  We will be starting 2021 reading Realistic Fiction and one of my favorite books, Because of Winn Dixie.  We will read the first 10 chapters this week.  We will learn how to summarize and practice this skill.  We will also learn the prefixes un- and pre-.  We will decode multisyllabic words and practice changing singular nouns to plural nouns using s, es or ies.  We will write a friendly letter.

 

Monday, January 4, 2021 - Watch a video explaining realistic fiction as a genre.  Watch the read aloud of chapters 1 & 2 of Because of Winn Dixie.  Answer questions about these 2 chapters.  Watch the video on open and closed syllables.  Practice syllabication with practice #2.

Thursday, January 7, 2021 - Watch the read aloud of chapters 7 & 8 of Because of Winn Dixie.  Answer questions about these 2 chapters.  Watch a video on plural nouns with s, es and ies.  Do plural nouns practice #2.  Take the summarizing quiz.

 

Friday, January 8, 2021 - Watch the read aloud of chapters 9 & 10 of Because of Winn Dixie.   Play Quizzizz to answer questions about these 2 chapters.  Watch the video on how to write a friendly letter.  Then write a friendly letter to someone from the future telling them about life in January 2021.

 

 

We will continue working on realistic fiction this week as we continue in our novel, Because of Winn Dixie.  We will be reading chapters 11 through 20 this week and answering questions about the story.  We will also work on the narrator's point of view.  We will continue our study of prefixes including im- and non-.  We will also continue to work on syllabication.  We will learn about the importance of dialogue in narration and learn how to punctuate dialogue in writing.

 

Monday, January 11, 2021 - No School

Wednesday, January 13, 2021 - Watch the video on prefixes for not.  Then watch the prefixes im- and non- video.  Do Room Recess prefixes quiz.  Do the prefixes practice.  Listen to the read aloud of chapters 13 & 14 of Because of Winn Dixie and take the comprehension quiz on these chapters.

 

Thursday, January 14, 2021 - Listen to the read aloud of chapters 15 & 16 of Because of Winn Dixie and take the comprehension quiz on these chapters.  Do the Room Recess syllables practice and take the syllables quiz.  Watch the dialogue teaching video.  Practice punctuating dialogue.

 

Friday, January 15, 2021 - Go through the point of view powerpoint.  Watch the point of view/narrator video and do the point of view practice #1.  Listen to the read aloud of Because of Winn Dixie chapters 17 & 18 and chapters 19 & 20 and take the comprehension quiz on chapters 17 - 20.

 

 

Week 19 - January 18 - January 22, 2021

Welcome to the beginning of our 3rd grading period.  We have finished a half of a year already and I'm excited for what we are going to be learning and doing in the last half of our 3rd grade year.  We will be working on biographies this week.  We will be reading a biography of the man who we celebrate this week, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We will also finish up our realistic fiction novel, Because of Winn Dixie.

Tuesday, January 19, 2021 - Listen to the read aloud of Because of Winn Dixie chapters 21 and 22.  Do the Quizzizz quiz for these two chapters.  Watch the read aloud for "Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?" Part 1.  Answer the quiz questions on these 2 chapters.

 

Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - Listen to the read aloud of Because of Winn Dixie chapters 23 and 24.  Watch the read aloud for "Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?" Part 2.  Answer the quiz questions on chapters 3 and 4.

 

Thursday, January 21, 2021 -  Listen to the read aloud of Because of Winn Dixie chapters 25 and 26.  Take the test on the story of Because of Winn Dixie.  Then do the daily language review practice 3.

 

Friday, January 22, 2021 -  Watch the read aloud for "Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?" Parts 3 and 4.  Answer the questions on chapters 5 - 9.  Then watch the read aloud for part 5, the finale, and answer quiz questions from the entire biography.

 

Week 21         February 1 - 5, 2021

This week we will be reading poetry.  We will learn to identify narrative and free verse poems with rhyming and repetition.  We will identify the theme of poems.  We will also learn about irregular verbs and write the correct past tense of irregular verbs.

 

Monday, February 1, 2021 - Watch the video on free verse poetry.  Read poems and answer questions about them.  Watch the irregular verbs song and practice writing irregular verbs in past tense.

 

Tuesday, February 2, 2021 - Watch the video on narrative poetry.  Read the poem of the Ballad of the Underground Railroad and answer questions about the poem.  Watch Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad Animation.  Take the quiz on irregular verbs.

 

Wednesday, February 3, 2021 - Read more poems and answer questions about them.  Watch the video on how to write a narrative poem.  Watch If I Ran The Schools read aloud.  Brainstorm ideas for a narrative poem and then write a narrative poem titled "If I Ran the School".

 

Thursday, February 4, 2021 - Watch the read aloud of the poem, "Windy Nights".  Read "Windy Nights" poem and answer questions.  Do the irregular verbs practice #2.

 

Friday, February 5, 2021 - Watch the poetry vocabulary video and the video on refrains.  Watch the read aloud of "Who Has Seen the Wind" poem.  Read the poem and answer questions about it.
