MONDAY, MAY 18--Through the Summer

Friday was officially the last day of online work--so no required assignments now!!!
Thank you so much to those who worked really hard and did their best--
you are going to be so ready for middle school!!!!
Smiley face with Graduation cap

I'm sorry we had to finish the year this way, and I will miss you!  Come back to Van Pelt as soon as we are able to do so, and visit with us--let us know how you are doing!

I am just going to post some things on here for when you get bored--some interesting sites and activities, or something to do when your parents tell you that you should keep busy--and just to keep your skills fresh--you should also keep reading and keep that mind active.

https://wideopenschool.org/programs/family/prek-5/daily-schedule/#3-5     This page has lots of activities to do--videos to watch, games to play, ideas for crafts, information about shows to watch to learn to draw or cook.  You can also search at the top of the page by age or interest, and so on.  Today they have activities like "Workout Like an Avenger," a scavenger hunt, and fabric scrap crafts.

https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-3-5.html  SCHOLASTIC Learn-at-home magazines.  We only read the first few days of stories, so there are lots more stories and videos to see on here.

https://www.getepic.com/   Keep reading all summer with online books!

https://www.ixl.com/   will keep you practicing the skills you need to stay ready for VMS

https://GoNoodle.com  exercise videos, dances, yoga, meditation--and all with FUN SONGS

www.flocabulary.com/join-class   (and enter code Q8R55S if you haven't joined already) --There are lots more subjects with videos--just search what you are interested in.  You can also watch "The Week in Rap Jr." by going to lessons and current events.

( I am still approving things on SeeSaw, so check back to see your work posted, and the cool things others posted, as well.)

And here are just a lot of other sites we have used this year--there is always lots more you can learn on any of these!
https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login     (or go from Clever--you can also go to FRECKLE from Clever)
www.duolingo.com Learn a new language
www.netsmartzkids.org  Learn about the internet with games and videos
https://hourofcode.com/us/learn   Practice coding--computer skills with themes like MINECRAFT, Star Wars, and Angry Birds

If you get stuck on a website, just go try a different one.  You can write and ask me for help with passwords, but I probably won't be checking in as much, so it may be a while until I get back with you.  But I will check in on teams and e-mail from time to time if you do need something, or just to say hi and let me know how you are.

I hope you have a great summer!!!!!

Let's get started!  Before next week, with official assignments, let's just try to get logged on to everything and reconnect with each other.  I am excited to hear from you!

Most of these can be accessed through Clever, on Mrs. Locke's Language Arts Page

Please forgive me if any names are left out or misspelled.  There was a lot of information to enter in a hurry.  Just let me know in an email or on SeeSaw, and I will do my best to fix it.

Schoology--Make sure you are signed up in my class.  If not, click join a course, then enter the code below.
        5A--    2XX9J-ZD53T          5B--  Q44WH-WK8TV           5C--     BH62J-QXVQC

Seesaw--  Use the personal learning code in the folder we sent home to log in to my class.  If you did not pick up your     folder, go to the seesaw link in Clever and log in as you have before.  If you still cannot figure out how to log in, email me and I will see if I can help.   **Once in Seesaw, follow the instructions for the assignment to let me know you are in!**

ReadWorks.org--We will be using this for assignments a couple of times a week.  Please go type in your class code to join, then click your name.  It will ask for a password.  Right now, the password is 1234.  When you get in, you need to change it to your regular login number you use for the computer.  I have tried updating them here, but it will not let me change them.  Please stick to the same password number for everything, so that it will be easy for you to remember or for me to fix if anything goes wrong with it.

            5A--   HVDCDF            5B--     VCJDTM            5C--    KL6SRH

IXL for Reading--  My log in info is different from Mrs. James's.  For my class, please go to IXL.com
Your username is your first and last name (that you typically go by here at school), plus the number 71. So mine would be kimlocke71 , and then your password is your regular number that you use to log in to most things.

When you log in, please go to Diagnostic tab, and take a pre-test.  You might do it for 15 minutes a day until you get through.  Please don't ask anyone for help, though.  It is not for a grade, but it lets the computer know what things you need to practice more.

Adventure Academy--Really cool game that is available now for FREE!  You can get an account by going to
https://www.adventureacademy.com/redeem/   and typing in code   SCHOOL7771

Once you log in, you get to create an avatar, earn points, go on quests, and we can even all meet up in a club and chat or compete against each other!  There are activities for Reading, but also Math, Science, and History, plus books and puzzles!  My character name is Vpteach, so you can request to be my friend, and I will be setting up a class club later.

Epic--  go to    Get Epic  , click on Student Login,  then enter class code  kgt5671.  Or you may see a link to my class already there.   I may have assignments on here, but you can also just find books and videos you are interested in.

I have added links to clever to make it easier.  Some new ones:

Moby Max--see if you can log in from Clever and click on any subject to get started.  If that does not work, I will need to add everyone manually.
GoNoodle-- with dances and exercise activities
FreeRice--good vocabulary practice, plus it helps donate rice to people in need.

More information about specific assignments will be out for Monday.  Until then, just get these sites ready, read as much as you can, and spend quality time with your family!

Saturday, March 21--click to expand or hide
I have set up a group for us on Microsoft Teams.  You should be able to find an icon on your computer that looks like this:Teams icon.  You may have to enter your email and password.
Remember, your email is your login name (like klocke3) @vhsbearcats.org.
Then you will go to Mrs. Locke's Reading.  There is a poll there to complete, and we can post messages and have a class meeting.  So, go see if you can log on and take the poll.
If you do not see that icon, you can try the one that looks like this:  office 365 icon.  Once you log in there, one of the apps listed should be teams.
(This is also where you can check your school email--Outlook)
If you are using a computer or device from home, you will have to search for Office 365 login and go from there.

I still haven't had many people log into SeeSaw and post.  There was a white paper with 2 sheets stapled together in your folder that had your individual login for SeeSaw.  That will be a key way for us to post work and communicate, so please log in and make sure it is working.

Adventure Academy--I don't know what the trouble is with it.  I wrote and asked for access, and this is what they sent.  Maybe clicking the link directly on this page would work better:  https://www.ageoflearning.com/school_closure_pdf/ParentLetter_AofL_SCHOOL7771.pdf

If you do get in, I would suggest starting on the intermediate level, but you can change to beginner or advanced if you think another level is better for you.

Once you log in and explore, request me as a friend ( Vpteach7605H ), so I can try to add you to our club.

Monday, March 23
Hello--
Welcome to our first real day of online assignments!  I miss you all, but we are going to have fun with some new online tools.  Yes, there is a little work, but some really cool sites, too!
If you have not read the last two posts, please click the arrows above to see how to log on to some of the sites we will be using.  Most of them are also on clever, but you may need to know the codes in the posts above.

Assignments--  (Looks like a lot, but they are all quick, so not really :-)  )

1)  Log into SeeSaw and post a video or make a poster saying hi to everyone and telling us how you are.

2) Go to Readworks, and read "A Kid in a Candy Store."  Read the story, click on the vocabulary tab, then answer the questions.

3) Read the assigned books (don't worry, they are very short!) on EPIC! Then look around and find another book or video you are interested in.  Let's try to make our caterpillar reach 50 books today!

4) Go to RoomRecess and play Sir Readalot.  Take a screenshot of your score (Press ALT and the PRTSCR key), then email it to me or post it on SeeSaw.

5) Log into Microsoft Teams and answer the one-question poll. (When everyone is logged in, we can have a group FaceTime meeting and chat with each other, read a story, and more)

If you don't see posts from your friends, please contact them and tell them to join us, help them figure out how, etc.
I can't wait to hear from you all!

Tuesday, March 24
***If you have do not know how to log in to any of the sites, please see posts above for directions--click on titles or arrows to expand***

Thank you to those who did your work yesterday.
I am going to try to find a way to reward the class or groups that have the most participation, so encourage your friends to log on and do their part to help your group!
I love seeing your posts in Seesaw and hearing from you on Teams!  I am trying to check email and questions often.  If you don't hear from me right away, just go on and do what you can.

Looks like Braxton was our high scorer on Sir Readalot, with Chloe a close second!

Assignments:
1)  In your folder, there was a released SOL test with a picture of a skeleton.  Read that poem, Bones, and answer the questions on the paper.  Then go to Schoology and fill out the answers online.  (A couple of you did that already, but I am not sure if you knew where to go for the story, so I deleted failing scores, and you can try again.)

2)  Go to Scholastic: Learn at Home and find Week 1, Day 1.  Read or listen to the stories, click on related videos and activities.  There is one about really cute sloths!  Then, go to SeeSaw and post a video, poster, or note telling something you learned or what you found interesting.

3)  Microsoft Teams--Answer the new poll and post any questions.  Hopefully tomorrow we can all do a team meeting and see and talk to each other.  We will aim for an 11:00 group chat on Wednesday.  If you can't join us then, it will hopefully be posted to see later.

4) Room Recess--Today, let's do the game called Kid Heroes Theme.  Take a picture of your high score with your phone or screenshot on the computer, then upload or paste however works best for you (email, seesaw, teams).
Who will be the winner today?????

HINT:  Some of these websites may be easier for you to use on your phone if it is not working easily on the laptop.  Try whatever works.

Wednesday, March 25

Good morning!  I'm very proud of those of you that are logging in and participating!  So far 5C is in the lead.  Over the last 2 days, they have had 43 assignments/posts done, 5B has had 16, and 5A 14.  So, tell everyone how to get logged on and get your group in the lead!

Chloe was our big winner on Room Recess yesterday--she got to LEVEL 23!!!  Great job!

A few notes about websites and questions to me:  If I can, I try to post a link on this page.  If you see something underlined, that is a direct link and clicking on it is the easiest way to get there.  If you just try to type those words in, it may not take you to the right place.  If I don't put an underlined link, I will write out the whole website link.   Another option might be to go through Clever.
The email link on this page does not seem to work--it has been going to my spam folder.  So, if you need to email me, just go to your regular method you use to email and type in [email protected]

Today's assignments:
1)  Next story in Bones packet--"His Truth is Marching On"--Read it and circle answers on paper, then go to Schoology to type in answers.  Please look over the ones you missed to see what was actually correct and figure out why.
(Sorry the first one was all crazy with letters and numbers mixed up--I think I have that fixed now.  Since it is the second story, this one will start with question 10 as "Question 1," but then they will stay in the right order.)

2)  Room Recess--Main Idea game.  Before playing, watch the little video lesson above it.  When finished with the game, take a screenshot of your score and post it on teams  (Hold down alt key and the one that says PRTSCR, then go to the teams page and right click, then paste)

3) Group Chat time!!!--Okay, here is a biggie!  We are going to try to get online together at 11:00.  Go to Microsoft Teams by clicking this link:  Microsoft Teams
or clicking the Teams icon on your main screen:  Teams icon.    (I will also try to put a link in Clever so you can get there that way.)
Go to Mrs. Locke's reading, then you should see a link to join a meeting.  When you click on it, you will need to turn on your camera and sound, and turn off your microphone.  I will tell you in the meeting how we can chat and then take turns talking to all see and hear each other.  This is my first time running a meeting online, so we all need to work together to make it go smoothly.  But I can't wait to see you!!!

Thursday, March 26

We had a great chat today in teams!  We will try another one again soon.  Please see posts above about how to get on teams and how to find your email.  The invite to the meeting may show up in email, and I have also sent instructions for how to get a free home account on EPIC.  So, check your school email.

5C still in the lead, 16 more interactions today, 7 for 5B, and 6 for 5A.
DAVID J has won the Main Idea game for the day, and LANDIN has been logging the most time on Epic.  Good job, guys!

Assignments:
1)  Scholastic Learn at Home--Week 1, Day 2.  Read about Zebras and George Washington, ***then go to SEESAW to answer the questions on your assignment. ***

2)  Go to EPIC--try Clever or email link I mentioned.  Today, let's find a COMIC to read.  There are lots of good ones on there--just look in the Comic category.  We are at 39 books finished.  Let's try to get over 50 today!

3)  BrainPOPJr--The log in is vpteach, password bearcats1     If the movie doesn't come up automatically, Click on Reading and Writing, then Reading Skills, then Facts and Opinions.  Watch the movie, then take the HARD quiz--you can do it!

Friday, March 27

Hi!  I hope you all plan to come out and see your teachers at our parade.  I will be in a reddish/burgundy Nissan Rogue (small SUV), so look for me to wave to you.  I will sure be looking to see all of your wonderful faces that I have missed so much!  I wish we could visit more than that, but I guess it will have to do!

We have 49 books read on Epic!  Keep it going!    I learned some interesting things about people on SeeSaw.  Go back and read each other's posts to learn about your friends.

Assignments
1)  Read the next released test page, Seahorses are Unusual Parents, and mark the answers on your paper.  Then go to QUIZIZZ to do the test online.  I think this will be simpler than Schoology, and more fun.  Most of you already have Quizizz saved on your computers, but if not, your username is your bearcats email and then your number is your password.  The quiz should be listed there as an assignment.  If not, the code is 053104.

2) Go to https://teams.microsoft.com/ and answer the poll.   Remember, you can always go there to ask me a question, post scores, or to let us know about interesting educational links you find.

3) Room Recess  -- Play the game Cause and Effect (watch the video lesson first) and post your score.  Some of you have been going above and beyond.  You don't need to play for hours--just a reasonable amount to get the practice.  If it starts repeating questions, stop.  If you are tired of it, stop.  I know some of you are competitive, but it is okay to do a little and then go to something else.  :-)
(If you all have easy ways for people to screenshot or post scores, please share them on teams for those who are having trouble)

Weekend:  Just keep reading on Epic or your own books.  Try GoNoodle for some cool dances, yoga, workouts, etc.  It is on Clever on my page.
MONDAY, MARCH 30

Thanks to those of who who were out for the parade on Friday.  It was so good to see you!  For those of you that did not get a chance to come out, here are some pictures of my car with the signs, so you know I am thinking of you!
(And I have to tell you that my daughter Kelly designed and made all the signs--and that is her riding with me)
Car with posters saying "Mrs. Locke loves you" and "Keep Reading"             Car with posters saying "Mrs. Locke is sending lots of hugs" and "I miss you all a bunch"

Assignments:
1)  Read the next story from your packet, "Dear Felicity..." and circle the answers on paper, then go to Quizizz and enter answers online.   If it doesn't show up in your assignments, the code is 215079.

(Dylan, Abram, Clayton, and Connor B had the top scores on Friday! And playing outside is what people had done the most of on the survey question.  Good job--definitely get lots of fresh air!))

2)  Go to ixl.com and then log in for reading.  My login info is different from Mrs. James'.  ***You will type in your name that you usually go by at school, then the number 71.  ***All lower case, no spaces.  So mine would be kimlocke71.  Then your password is your regular login number.
When you log in, please go to the green bar and click on Diagnostic tab, and take a pre-test.  If you don't finish today, come back tomorrow to finish.  You might do it for 20 minutes a day until you get through.  Please don't ask anyone for help, though.  It is not for a grade, but it lets the computer know what things you need to practice more.

3)  Room Recess--Go watch the video lesson for Author's Purpose then play the game.

READ a book or on EPIC, and get some exercise outside or with Go Noodle!  (See links on Clever)

Tuesday, March 31

Hello! I hope everyone is doing well!
Please remember as you are using the computer much more these days, that there are some rules and safety things to keep in mind:
1--you cannot download software, please use appropriate sites;
2--do not give out personal information to anyone online;
3--if you are chatting with anyone online, it should be someone you already know in person--no new people/strangers.

Assignments:

1) Scholastic Learn at Home:  Go to Week 1, Day 3 and Read the stories, watch the videos, etc.  *** Then go to SeeSaw and answer the questions and post pictures.  ***  There are actually 2 different assignments/posts on SeeSaw for this, so do both. :-)

2) Go to ixl for reading and log in.  (see directions from yesterday)  If you have not finished the diagnostic, please do that.  Once you have finished that, it should tell you which lessons you need to work on.  I want you to click on one of those and do the lesson it gives you.  Try to get a Smart Score of 80 on the lesson.

3) Take a break and dance with Go Noodle.  Here is a link to ROAR, and today is National Crayon Day, so here is an indoor recess routine about the colors:  RoyGBiv  .
Right now my class has 191 minutes and are on Level 4.  Let's see how many minutes and levels we can add today!

4)  Quizlet.  I am giving you a set of vocabulary words to work with.  We will have a quiz on them on Friday, so practice some each day.  These are words about character traits, so think about what a person with each trait would act like in a story.  Today, go to Mrs. Locke's Quizlet class and join if you haven't.  You can sign up with your vhsbearcats.org email.  The join link is https://quizlet.com/join/bTu5U4Su2 Make sure to use your regular first name and be appropriate with your username.  Then look for the folder "Online Learning 2020" and the list called "Character Words--1st 12."  Study the flashcards for the set, then go to Learn.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1

Yay!  We made it to April.  Thank you to those who are doing work.  Great job!  I love seeing your posts and answers to questions.
Please remind any friends you talk to that we are still in session with school and they need to log on to do their assignments.  Everyone has to show that they have learned the skills needed to move on to 6th grade.    We are keeping track of that for Dr. Perrigan.

Assignments:

1)  ixl--Very few people have logged on to do the diagnostic.  Please go to https://www.ixl.com/ and log in to my reading class--not Mrs. James'.  It will not work for the reading skills.  For mine your username is your name with a 71 at the end-- like johnsmith71.  Then your regular number as your password.    The diagnostic is kind of long--it may take 2 days.
When you finish the whole diagnostic,  it should give you recommended lessons or an action plan based on your score.  Do one or more each day, trying to get at least 80 for your smart score.

2)  The last story in the 1st SOL packet--"My Brother's Mess."  Circle the answers on the paper and then go to quizizz.com to post answers.  If not assigned, go to Code 966731.

3) Quizlet.  It did not show that anyone got in to quizlet and studied the correct set.  I am setting up a new class, with a new join code.   Go to https://quizlet.com/join/2AvhQg5xU to join my class.
You can sign up with your vhsbearcats.org email.
Make sure to use your regular first name that you write on your papers.  If it is taken you may add a number or middle name to the end, but nothing crazy.
Then look for the list called "Character Words--1st 12."  Study the flashcards for the set, then go to Learn.

4)  Kahoot--go to Kahoot challenge or type in kahoot.it and code 0877330 for an April Fool's Day challenge!

5)  Let's try to do another group chat in TEAMS.  We will try to meet at 1:00.  Go to https://teams.microsoft.com/  and join our meeting.  We are going to read the 1st story in the yellow book from the folder, and then chat.

THURSDAY, APRIL 2
Our group chat from yesterday is posted on Teams if you missed it and want to go hear the story or see some friendly faces!

1) BrainPop--Watch the videos and do the Hard Quizzes (they are not hard--just 5 questions!) for the following 2 lessons:  https://jr.brainpop.com/readingandwriting/word/prefixes/

2) Quizlet-- Go to Quizlet from Clever, and log in or join.  Or you can click the join link if you have not joined yet.
https://quizlet.com/join/2AvhQg5xU   You need to be registered in my class (Mrs. Locke's Reading Class April-May 2020) to show your work for credit.
You also must use your regular name so I will know who has logged in and give you credit--if the name is taken, you can add a number or appropriate word to it.
We are on the list called "Character Words--1st 12"
Today, you need to practice the match game and maybe try the gravity game to practice typing and spelling.

3) Epic!--  Yesterday we celebrated April Fool's Day, but did you know there are lots more holidays in April.  Read the assigned book, Celebrate April, to find out more.  You can post in SeeSaw about something cool you learned if you want.
We are at 67 books read as a class, so if you go read today, we can get over 100!
go to https://www.getepic.com/sign-in   or from Clever.   If you have trouble logging in, go check your school email for an invite to log in from home.

4) Go to ixl.com (please read instructions from previous days--you cannot be on the math site--you have to log out and log in with a different username for it to work)
and finish the diagnostic or do one of your recommended lessons --try to get to a smartscore of 85!
Audrey has answered 185 questions this week already!  GREAT JOB!  And Nick is at 127!

*****   Remember to take breaks from your work to go outside, do a dance break, do an art project, play a game with your family, or something else fun!  *****

FRIDAY, APRIL 3

1) Quizlet--test on Character words. If you are having trouble logging in with the join link, go to Clever and click on the icon on my page there.  Then request to join.  You will still need to enter your email and such.
Several of you who logged on did not do character words, but did another list.  So, I tried removing all other lists.  Please pick "Character Words--1st 12."
Study or do games 1st, then go to the test.  If you have joined the class, your score should show up for me.  If you were not able to join, you will need to take a screenshot to email or post in teams.

2)  Go to ixl.com (please read instructions from previous days--you cannot be on the math site--you have to log out and log in with a different username for it to work)
and finish the diagnostic or do one of your recommended lessons --try to get to a smartscore of 85!

3) Room Recess--since we are studying Character Trait words, we are doing the Trick or Trait game.  Post your score or send me a screenshot in email.

4) GoNoodle--Try to go to Clever and then find the Go Noodle App.  It did not show up for some people.  I tried posting it again, but if it still does not show up, you can go to https://app.gonoodle.com/  or just search for GoNoodle.  I am going to give you my login information, so that we can all go to the same page, earn points together for the class and make our character level up!   So, the email is [email protected], and the password is bearcats.

Here are some songs and dances to try.  Last year, my students really liked MooseTube (look under channels).  Yesterday I saw the Cookie Boogie, and it looked really cute.  Or if you like Sonic the Hedgehog, there is one called "Here comes the Boom!"  Anyway, look at channels to find one you like, or tell it to pick for you.  Lots of fun things from dances to yoga, silly stuff and educational.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!!!
Yes, this was supposed to be our Spring Break, but officially that got cancelled, but we are not "in school" anyway, so it is kind of confusing.

***Anyway, we will officially be starting teaching and practicing on Essential Skills next week--April 13
Everyone needs to be logging on and doing assignments, because we will be documenting that students have learned the skills to go to the next level (and not need to do remediation this summer or next year).***

This week, I am not posting formal assignments, so please take this time to make sure you are logged in/signed up for all the sites.  Here is a document that lists instructions, if you want to bookmark it or print it out.

Otherwise, this week, these are some things to practice to keep your brain active:

1) ixl.com     Log in to the reading, not math  (see directions)  and go to Diagnostic.  Once you have finished that, it will assign recommended lessons.  Just keep doing one lesson a day to stay fresh.

2) Epic!--   Go online to read a book each day.  There are lots of different types of things to read--find any topic you enjoy.

3)  GoNoodle--go to Clever and then find the Go Noodle App.  If it does not show up, you can go to https://app.gonoodle.com/  or just search for GoNoodle.  I am going to give you my login information, so that we can all go to the same page, earn points together for the class and make our character level up!   So, the email is [email protected], and the password is bearcats.   Look at channels to find one you like, or tell it to pick for you.  Lots of fun things from dances to yoga, silly stuff and educational.      Stay Active--Get outside when you can for fresh air!

4) You can always still do things like RAZ kids, Freckle, FreeRice, Room Recess.

MONDAY, APRIL 13

2) This time of year, we are usually done with all SOL lessons and I start my college and careers project.  So... today your assignment is to go and research careers you may be interested in.   I have several websites on Clever for you to explore--go to Clever, and click on any of the first 4 links on Mrs. Locke's page under "College and Career."
Explore to find some jobs you might like--take notes on paper--there may be some you haven't heard of before and we don't want  you to forget about them!
(In case you can't get on Clever, here are the links also:
https://www.vaview.vt.edu/68/check-it/who-r-u/index.cfm    On each page, click things you like--scroll all the way down each page--at the end, it tells you what categories you like most, you click on those, and it tells you some jobs in that field.  You can click on each one and learn more about how much money it makes and what kind of schooling you need.

https://access.bridges.com/portal/student/landingPage.do?siteId=1237840&password=gslion   Paws in Jobland--look around, take the quiz, click on things to learn more

https://www.vaview.vt.edu/k5/check-it/kids-search/   Another way to explore.  After picking a subject, click on jobs for specifics.  There are even videos to watch about some of the jobs!

https://www.vaview.vt.edu/k5/check-it/kids-search/   More interesting jobs you might not have heard of--like a horse therapist or someone who makes perfumes.
3)  Go on Seesaw and tell me about some of the jobs you thought you might like.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 13

I am sorry, but we cannot do a Zoom meeting today.  I am scheduled for 5 different meetings today at school or on teacher teams!!!!  And 3 of them overlap times!   So, there is not an opportunity to meet with you all.  I am so sorry.  But I will try to do it on Friday--I have a special year-end activity to do.  Please send me a message on Teams or email about whether or not you can do Friday around 1.

1)  CAREERS continued . . . .We are going to build on what we did yesterday.  Pick ONE of the jobs from yesterday that you are most interested in.  Today you are doing research about that specific career, what it involves, what it takes to get that job, how much it pays, and things like that.  Then there is a form to fill out on SeeSaw.   So you might want to look at that first to see what you need to look up, and TAKE NOTES!

Here are some websites to help:

https://www.vaview.vt.edu/k5/check-it/kids-search/    Go to the search bar at top right and type in the job you want.  It may give you a few choices, but when you click on a job, read the whole page, click on the links in the grey box and read those.

2) If you have time, practice reading skills on ixl.com sometime today and get that SmartScore up!  Also, remember to do a page on your Weekly Warm-up.

THURSDAY, MAY 14

***Zoom meeting Friday at 11:00 am--Will that work for you?  Let me
know--I would love to have everyone involved so we can do a
                                           little year-end activity!" ***

1) Work on finishing the Weekly Warm-up.

2) COLLEGES research--today you are going to look at what school you might want to go to after high school to get ready for your job!
Think about your job you picked yesterday.  What kind of education and training do you need?  What do you need to major in at college?  After you do the research, go to SEESAW to tell me about the college or school you picked!

You can go to this site https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/tools/college/college1.asp
and pick a state where you might want to go to college.  You can just search all the schools in the state, or you can narrow it down with options to pick a 4 year college, or a 2 year community college, or look at what major you want to focus on.  After you search, click on some colleges and read the facts about them or look at their websites.

You might search in Google for "Good colleges for _____________ jobs"  or "Where can I get a _________ degree"

If you already know a school you want to go to, that is fine, you can just search for info about it.  But at least explore a few other options.  There are so many good schools to go to besides the few you have heard of.

*** Some people may not want to go to college but may want to go learn a skill like Truck Driving, Hair Styling, Auto Repair, Plumbing, and so on.  Then you want to look at a
trade school.  Here are some websites of local places to do that:     ***

https://tcatelizabethton.edu/       Tennessee College of Applied Technology--Elizabethton

https://www.exaltacademy.com/    Cosmetology/Hair Styling     (click on "school")   This is just next door to us!

https://jacobscreek.jobcorps.gov/    They say "WE OFFER THE SKILLS YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IN TODAY'S WORKFORCE, AT NO COST TO YOU OR YOUR FAMILY."         --  in Bristol, TN

http://www.tricountydrivingacademy.com/    truck driving, heavy equipment, diesel mechanic   --  in Russell County

(Maybe some family members might even be looking for a new career and want to try some of these schools out!  You can show them all the cool things you found!)

FRIDAY, MAY 15            ***Zoom meeting at 11:00 today--info after assignments***

1) YEAR-END reflections--on SeeSaw, think about this past school year and leaving Van Pelt.

2) College and Career Final Projects--when we were at school, I had students make posters of their college and career goals.  Here are some examples:
poster of college goals      poster of career goals

If you want to make your own poster, you can find the pictures and forms on the TEAMS website--under general, go to the top of the page, click files, and find College and Career Project Materials.  You can print them out, color, glue onto poster.  OR you can always do your own style.  Take a picture and send to me on TEAMS, EMAIL, or SEESAW!  I want to see how creative you are!
If you don't want to do the whole poster or can't get the materials, you can just design a flag for your college on SeeSaw.

3)  Turn in Weekly Warm-Up if you haven't.

ZOOM!!                                                    Join the meeting to play end of the year GAMES!!!
