History

Stonewall Jackson Elementary School is a three-floor traditional brick facility housing Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade classes.  Designed by architect, C. B. Kearfott, the school opened in September 1948.  An addition to the main building was completed ten years later and opened in 1958.  The school is situated on approximately two acres and amenities include two fenced playground areas, tennis courts, and an outdoor softball field.  With an enrollment of approximately 275 students, it is the second-largest elementary school in the city system.

Stonewall Jackson Elementary enjoys full accreditation as set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning. Fulfilling the purposes of Stonewall Jackson Elementary School, the faculty and staff dedicate themselves to excellence in education.  “Preparing all students to thrive" is more than just a mission statement.  Each student is supported...encouraged to reach full potential within an atmosphere of challenge and acceptance.

Beginning with a federally funded Title I Pre-Kindergarten program, Stonewall Jackson offers services specifically designed to meet the needs of young children.  The preschool program is based on the belief that young children learn through play. Our goal is to help each child become an active learner, able to self-regulate, and excited about school and working together. A large, bright space provides the perfect environment for purposeful, flexible, fun-filled academic exploration. Teachers, paraprofessionals, and resource personnel team together to ensure instruction meet the needs of individual students, encouraging creativity, and self-exploration.

Because all students are considered individuals, needs are met in a multitude of ways.  As students progress through primary and upper elementary grades, Stonewall Jackson offers a variety of support services.  Included in these services, is instruction in speech by a certified speech pathologist and resource teachers. Stonewall Jackson also enjoys the services of a full-time nurse and school counselor. Classroom guidance, small group and individual counseling, and parent/teacher consultations are provided.  Special emphasis is placed on good nutrition. Well-balanced meals and healthy snacks are provided daily by experienced cafeteria staff.  All students in Pre-School through Grade Five receive instruction in physical education with emphasis placed on overall wellness.

Recognizing the importance of a comprehensive curriculum, Stonewall Jackson places special emphasis on creating an understanding of and appreciation for the fine arts.  Instruction in music and visual art are provided on a regular basis.  All grades receive weekly instruction in music and students in Grades Three through Five receive art instruction from an art specialist.  Students attend performances at the Paramount Center for the Arts, Theater Bristol, and the William King Regional Arts Center.

Children identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are provided quality services in the least restrictive environment.  Services may include but are not limited to early identification and assessment, diagnostic medical services, physical and occupational therapy, school health services, transportation, psychological services, counseling and other support programs.  Programs are sequential and services include perceptual training and academic instruction.  Additionally, SJES enjoys the support of agencies such as Highlands Community Services.

Tutorial in-school and after-school programs support and extend daily learning opportunities at Stonewall Jackson Elementary.  Students attend extended daycare programs such as Girls, Inc., Boys and Girls Club, and other accredited private and parochial operations.  The Bristol Virginia School System also offers a B-180 summer program and holiday enrichment opportunities.  Likewise, a summer Transition Program is offered Fifth Graders moving to Virginia Middle School.  Unique opportunities, therefore, exist for students at Stonewall Jackson to experience and appreciate the gifts and weaknesses found in all people.  Students live and learn together.  Faculty and staff role-model behaviors befitting model students and assume the responsibility of instructing students not only in basic skills, but also in developing intellectual curiosity, high self-esteem, and a desire for learning that will extend well beyond the school years.
