Van Pelt Elementary Archery Tournament

4th and 5th grade students at Van Pelt have been recognized recently for their successes in the first ever Van Pelt Archery Tournament! Van Pelt is the only school (elementary, middle, high), other than Saltville Elementary that has competed in a NASP Archery unit.

Bullseye Certificates: students were awarded this certificate for any bullseye scored throughout the unit.

Class Score Awards: Each student shot 5 arrows and could receive a total score of 50 points. Class averages were found by totaling each student score and taking the average.

4th grade:

  • 1st place: Mrs. Barlow’s class- average 23.06
  • 2nd place: Mrs. Hayter’s class- average 21.91
  • 3rd place: Mrs. Murray’s class- average 19.19

5th grade:

  • 1st place: Mrs. James’s class- average 26.15
  • 2nd place: Mrs. Selfe’s class- average 25.00
  • 3rd place: Mrs. Kestner’s class- average 20.87

The overall top scoring class went to Mrs. James’s 5th grade class

The Best Girl Archer Award goes to 5th grade:

  • Kaleigh Widener with a score of 34 total points

The Best Boy Archer Award:

  • 4th graders Elijah Morris and Jonah King both tied with a score of 39 points. The young men had a shootout with 5 arrows to decide who the award would go to…
  • Elijah Morris placed 2nd overall with shootout score of 31 points
  • Jonah King placed 1st overall with a shootout score of 38 points.

The success of this unit and event would not have been possible without the help of many. Special thanks to our principal, Jared Rader approving for Mason, Sarah Kate, and myself to attend professional development training this past January. Thank you to Mr. Mason for his help in putting on this tournament during the week. Chris McElraft for making our 3D printed trophies for class score awards, top class overall award, and best girl/boy archer awards. Sara Kate Tallman for her help decorating, setup of the assembly, assembly photos, and time of behind-the-scenes work. Teachers and staff that helped monitor 4th, 5th, and Kindergarten students during the assembly.

This begins a new yearly tradition at Van Pelt, and I am thankful and blessed to have been a part of it. Teaching Archery provides students with the knowledge and learning that,

EVERY ARROW IS AN OPPORTUNITY!!
