The 2020-2021 school year was a year like no other. By following a balanced risk approach, Bristol Virginia Public Schools was able to provide in-person instruction for every family who wanted it from the very beginning of the school year. Our goal for this upcoming year is to return to normal as much as possible. We continue to monitor COVID-19 in our area and are adjusting our plan for next school year accordingly.

 

You may be aware that the CDC has said that all vaccinated students and staff should be able to go mask less this school year. We are unsure about how this will affect the guidance that Virginia provides for reopening school this August. If you are considering allowing your child, age 12 or older, to be vaccinated, they will have to have the first vaccine administered by Thursday, July 15in order to be fully vaccinated by the time school starts. This would enable them to take the 2nd dose of the vaccine on August 5th. In this scenario, they would be considered fully vaccinated by August 19th which is the first day of school.

 

This is not an endorsement for the vaccine, it is simply an attempt to provide as much information to our parents as possible. Getting the vaccine is a very personal decision, and we support our families in their decision either way they choose. We simply don't want a student to miss sporting events, band competitions, or instructional time because we didn't notify you of opportunities for to receive the vaccine prior to the beginning of school.
