Parent Internet Safety Training Video Unit 1 - Tips for General Online Safety for Children and Inappropriate Content

Internet safety for Parents Guardians and Communities.  This presentation was created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The National Center's mission defines is to find missing children, reduce child sexual exploitation and prevent future victimization.  NetSmartz is a safety program that teaches children ages 5 to 17 about how to make better choices online and become responsible digital citizens.  It also guides parents and protecting their children online and it offers a variety of free resources including games video classroom lessons and presentations like this one.  You can find these resources and many more at www.netsmart.org.  We are going to talk about the ways you can protect your children online no matter how they access the internet. Our kids go online using School computers friends computers laptops and tablets they also access the internet on cell phone game console and handheld gaming devices technology changes all the time and kids are constantly finding the newest website apps and gadgets it's up to you to teach them basic rules of Internet safety so they can use all of these responsibly kids do all kinds of things online they use social media sites and apps like Facebook Twitter Instagram and Tik Tok they play go games and text their friends on cell phones they use Google to help with their homework they play video games and they playing virtual worlds like Minecraft they download music from iTunes and watch videos on YouTube and I download lots of apps from the App Store and Google play today we're not going to go through every website and app your child might be using excellent information about how to check your child's browser history using privacy settings and how to report on the varies apps and websites your child may be using is readily available online remember learning about specific apps only helps if you learning about the apps your child is actually using the best thing you can do is ask your child which apps he or she uses and then work through and explore the privacy and Reporting functionality together but remember the most important thing is to communicate with your children about what they're doing online start the conversation by asking about their interest ask them questions like what's your favorite app who do you talk to when you play games what kinds of pictures do you like to post discuss these things with him regularly so that they know you're available and have an open mind kids meeting that you won't freak out and stop them from going online if something happens you may not be able to protect them from everything but you can teach them how to make responsible choices when they encounter a problem here are some tips for keeping your kids safe monitoring is crucial keep an eye on what your child is doing whenever they're on a device but it has a phone laptop or an iPad never allow your child to have a device on Loan in the room it's a good idea that a rule that all devices must be kept in the room where the parent or trusted adult monitor where the child is going on the internet set a timer changing that you collect devices computers phones handheld games and iPads and charge them and keep them in the room with you meaning of our students stay at too late at night taking social media and being on the internet some other things you can do require that your child gives you all the usernames and passwords to their social media accounts check your child's social media account regularly check the browsing history of your child's devices it's always empty you need to ask questions in the most important one of those why because it's cracked everywhere your child goes online the good news is that most children are not getting in trouble online but there are still risks to consider the issues we will look at today are not specific to just one device one website no matter what your children like to do online they face the following issues inappropriate content online privacy text online enticement and cyberbullying you don't have to worry about cyberbullying because you have a younger child or your teenager already knows not to respond to inappropriate messages these topics are relevant to every child at some point and today will help you talk to them in a way that's appropriate for your child's age this chart shows are you can talk to your children about all of these online risks in age appropriate way for example you should start talking about online manners or sometimes called netiquette with your youngest children so they have a good foundation for later lessons for issues like cyberbullying you can start by talking to your twins about not posting revealing pictures and evolve that into a Frank Grafton about 16 when they become teenagers you can talk to young children about not trusting everyone they meet online and by the time their team they'll be ready to discuss the risks of meeting offline remember the skills your child needs to be safe online or built over time think about how we prepare children to ride in car safely we start by buckling them into their car seat as they grow into Toddlers and play Aquaman but we start to talk about why they're buckled in and we even let them help us letting them climb into the seat themselves and helping with the Buckle when we require comply we don't drive unless they're buckled and we stopped the car if they unbuckle themselves and we have these conversations many many times over the years we work with other adults to make sure they also requiring compliance and eventually when our children are in cars without us they've learned to wear their seatbelt through years of practice of having that expectation set and enforce when they start dry hang on their own we talked about requiring passengers to wear their seatbelts as well we don't start talking about wearing a seatbelt when they're 16 the same is true online from the very beginning of a child do anything online parents need to talk to children in an age-appropriate way about safe Behavior online these conversations must be regular an active at all ages
