Response to Executive Order 2

Good afternoon,

In accordance with Executive Order 2, beginning on January 24, 2022 Bristol Virginia Public School parents will have the option to allow their child to spend a large portion of the school day without wearing a mask. There will be certain parts of the day when students must wear a mask. Those include:
• on the bus
• seeing a medical professional (school nurse, etc)
• in the food line
• during small group instruction (elementary and some middle and high school classes)
• during certain therapy services
• returning after a five-day quarantine or isolation
• when participating in the “test to stay” protocol
Parents should complete the attached form to grant permission for their child to be maskless during the school day. In accordance with Executive Order 2, no reason must be given for the decision. Returning a form is not required for parents who want their child to remained masked
Our first priority is to continue to provide in-person instruction. Our second priority is to do so as normally as possible. Due to current VDH quarantine protocols, parents should know that choosing not to wear a mask will greatly increase their child’s chances of being quarantined. This is a VDH regulation and not a school decision. As a result, we encourage everyone to continue wearing masks until we can get through the current Omicron surge. BVPS will be putting out a press release with other divisions later today with more information on the level of transmission in our community, masking, and quarantine protocols/risk.
Staff will continue with current masking protocols.
The Attorney General has released information supporting the Executive Order. We are still waiting on guidance from the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Virginia Department of Health as promised in the Executive Order. If their guidance causes us to make adjustments to these procedures, we will do so as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, we did not have that guidance in a timely manner and we need to share this information with students and parents before the end of the school day.
Again, I appreciate your cooperation, patience, and grace. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Keith Perrigan
