School Safety

Dear Parent, Guardian, Caregiver,
Bristol Virginia Public Schools takes very seriously our responsibility to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students. As a matter of fact there is nothing we do that is more important than providing for the safety of our students and staff. My heart aches as I watch the news when a crisis happens like the one yesterday in Florida. My number one goal as Superintendent of Schools is to do my best to ensure that your child is as safe in our schools as they are in your care. As a result of the current crisis in Florida, I want to take this opportunity to tell you about safety initiatives in our school system.
Every school has a crisis plan, crisis team, and threat assessment team in place. All schools have a School Resource Officer, who is trained and armed, which is provided by the Bristol Virginia Police Department. The Police Department and Sheriff's Office are also in our schools as part of routine patrols. We have surveillance cameras on the interior and exterior of our buildings. All buildings remain locked and require office approval before visitors are allowed in the building. There are many additional precautions that are taken on a daily basis, some of which are building specific and/or confidential for staff only.
Even though we believe that we have a strong safety plan in place at each of our schools, we are constantly looking for ways to improve. If you have ideas of how we can make our schools safer, please do not hesitate to contact your child's principal or myself directly. I promise that we will take your recommendations into consideration.
I have a meeting scheduled with Chief Austin and Sheriff Maples to discuss our current safety plans and to discuss ways we can strengthen our partnerships to make our schools as safe as possible. I have also contacted State Legislators to discuss ways that they can support our local efforts. I also look forward to your input as we evaluate our most important responsibility. Please join me daily to pray for the safety of our students, staff, and schools.
Thank you,
Keith Perrigan
