Bearcat Best

Our School Board and Superintendent Dr. Keith Perrigan recognized our Technology Department and our Federal Programs Department as Bearcat Best at the recent School Board Meeting.

Technology Department:

Thanks to our Technology Department, our school system was ready to implement virtual learning as soon as it was needed.  Mr. Shelton saw early in January of 2020, that something big was getting ready to happen and persuaded Dr. Perrigan to begin planning for the possibility that we might need to move quickly to virtual learning.  A team was assembled and the planning began.  Dr. Perrigan stated, "If it had not been for the leadership of Jeff Shelton, we would have not been ready."  Our Technology Department worked long hours getting devices and programs ready so that when Virginia schools closed down, we continued learning via online platforms.  We were one of the few school system that was not caught off guard, we had the tools that we needed already in place.  Dr. Perrigan also noted, "Not everyone sees all that the folks in the Technology Department do, but we all experience it."

Federal Programs Department:

Our Federal Programs Department, under the direction of Jennifer Hurt, saw an enormous amount of change during the Pandemic.  This department worked hard to make sure that our students had what they needed to be successful.  Through grants awarded due to Jennifer Hurt's foresight, this department was awarded nearly 18 million dollars in federal funding.  This funding provides for before school tutoring, after school programs, summer programs and programs to address learning loss for students in Pre-K through grade 12.  Mrs. Hurt gave this analogy of how federal programs work, "Education is the ice cream and federal programs are the sprinkles on top.  You can have education without them, but they enhance the educational experiences of our students."
