KINDERGARTEN NEWS

 

       

          Welcome to your new beginnings as a kindergarten student at Stonewall Jackson Elementary.

We are very excited to know that you will be with us to learn many new things,  make new friends and

have fun while you are here!

            Our first week will be a time for each individual class to come on their assigned day in order

to give each group time to become better acclimated to their teachers and classroom.  A letter will be

sent to family informing you of the day that you child will attend during the week of Aug. 20th  -

Aug. 22nd.  Monday, Aug. 25th will be the beginning date that all students will be in attendance

every day.

            You will receive information about our kindergarten program during the first few days of

our school year.  We look forward to meeting you and your child and the great year ahead!  Please

feel free to talk with me about any interests or concerns you may have.     

October 3, 2008 Kindergarten News

We have just finished our First Six weeks of the school year!  We have had a wonderful start on a new year with a wonderful group of students.  They have adjusted well to our kindergarten program.  During this time we have learned the letters names and sounds for Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, Pp.  In math we have learned the numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10; graphing; shapes; and patterns.  We have discussed seasons, being a good citizen, living versus non-living.  We have also begun with our new reader "Hot, Hot, Hot!".  Please share with your child in reading these books and also reviewing their phonics worksheets daily.

We have also just finished our conferences  and I appreciate the good response and attendance.   I invite and look forward to meeting with any that were not able to meet their appointment during the scheduled time.  Please contact me to set up a convenient time to meet.  We are looking forward to the next six weeks and new learning activities.  Report cards will be sent home at the end of this 2nd six weeks period.

Our month is quickly passing !  We have had many exciting things to happen during this time.  The Fall Festival was a great success as well as our McTeacher night at McDonald's!  I thank you for all your help and support in both of these events.  You all helped to make it so successful.  We have also just finished our PALS testing of our kindergarten testing.  This is a state-wide assessment for all kindergarten students in the state of Virginia.  Our students enjoyed their walk to the fire station to learn about the life of a fireman and the equipment and tasks that they are called on to do.  Our students were very well-behaved and we were so proud of them.

 

November,  2008

Our 2nd six weeks will end Nov. 14th..  We will be completing report card assessments with report cards being sent home Wed., Nov. 19th.

In preparation for the Thanksgiving holidays our studies will be focused on the Indians and the pilgrims and their celebration of thankfulness upon their first successful year and settlers in the new world.  Students will be earning feathers on their headbands by learning the important self information of full name, parent's names, address, phone number, age, birth date, ability to tie shoes and buttoning and zipping .  We will have a "Fruit Feast" Tues., Nov. 25th in celebration of our Thanksgiving.  Each student will be asked to contribute a specific fruit for our "Feast".  A letter will be sent listing the fruit your child needs to bring. Teachers will provide pumpkin muffins.  Schools will be closed Nov. 26- 28th.

January, 2009

The new year, 2009,  has begun with happy faces after a nice holiday vacation and an eagerness to begin anew.  Students are settling in to their regular kindergarten day routine with a positive attitude, seeking to learn new things.  Our third six weeks and first semester will be ending on Jan. 16, and report cards being sent home on the 21st.  There  also be a copy of your child's  recent Literacy Screening with a comparison from their initial screening from the last assessment.  We are pleased that the students are showing much growth.

 

 

February, 2009

February has begun with it being very evident that "Punxatawny Phil" certainly saw his shadow!  Our six more weeks of winter weather has surely begun.  After completing their report card assessments, our students have discovered that they have worked and mastered 17 of their alphabet letters and sounds from our Saxon Phonics Language program with only 7 new letters remaining.  The students were excited to learn about the groundhog's shadow - what caused it to happen and how they can make their own shadows.

March, 2009

      March has begun with gentle as a lamb weather - will it roar out like a lion?  Suspense and excitement builds as March 17th approaches and the visit from the "Leprechaun's", who make a mess of the roombut always leave us a pot of gold!  With the end of the 4th six weeks,  parent conferences will be scheduled. Parents are encouraged to attend to discuss your child's progress and any if needed areas of concern that will need additional remediation practice during the remaining 5th & 6th weeks of school.   Phonics letters of study will Cc, Ee, Yy, and Zz.  Students will learn  about poetry and write their own poems. Math studies will include coin and value recognition of the penny, dime and nickel; measurement of length with nonstandard units of measure; addition with some/some more and abc patterning. 

 

April, 2009

       The end of the 5th six weeks is quickly approaching along with the arrival of spHring.  Spring Break is an highly anticipated break by students and faculty alike.  The awakening of the earth with trees budding out, flowers,  and the greening of the grass renews all of us alike.  Assessments for report cards will be completed during the week following break.  Phonetic letters to be introduced are Dd, Vv. Jj,and Xx.  Math concepts are number recognition of 11 - 30; tangrams; understanding of the term "sphere" and ordering by size.  Life cycle of plants and seeds and a celebration of Earth Day and protecting our environment through recycling will also be completed.  Seasonal activities of dying eggs, egg hunt, and a party to celebrate these events is scheduled.  A parent info letter will be sent home in your child's folder.  Please check these daily.

REMINDER!!!!!  Spring Break will begin with early dismissal on April 9th @1:00 p.m.  Students will return to school on April 19th.
