| Hi. My name is
Sara Ellis and I have been teaching at Van Pelt Elementary School since
1998, having previously been associated with a Community Action Agency
Head Start program as a Component Coordinator in the area of
Special Needs and Mental Health.
A native "Tar Heel," I earned a
BS degree in psychology from Campbell University and a MA in special
education from Appalachian State University. I hold teaching
endorsements in intellectual disabilities and severe and profound
disabilities and have completed additional coursework through UVA, Old
Dominion University, and George Mason University in the areas of
collaboration, assistive technology, and autism.
In addition to teaching my
students at Van Pelt, I am also an adjunct instructor for the special
education program offered through Virginia Intermont College, teaching a
class in Consultation/Collaboration/Inclusion/Transition.
As a special education teacher,
it is my responsibility to assure each student in my classroom develops
educationally, socially, and physically to the greatest extent
possible, based on his or her individual strengths and needs.

Hello. My name is Sharon Young and
I am a teaching assistant in our classroom. I am a native "Bristolian,"
having graduated from John S. Battle High School.
My experience working with children with special needs began 25 years
ago and during that time I have worked with students who have learning
disabilities, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, multiple
disabilities, and autism.
I enjoy spending time with my family and am involved in various
ministries at my church. My other interests include reading, walking,
and music.
