School Board Goals 2001-2002

Curriculum, Instruction, and Staff Development

  • Review programs for advanced students at the elementary school level
  • Develop a plan for the training of substitute teachers
  • Continue the review of the vocational program and make revisions to course offerings as indicated by the review
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the changes in the counseling program
  • Indicate the development of benchmark assessments in selected Standards of Learning courses
  • Revise division calendar to accommodate more effectively staff development and SOL assessments
  • Evaluate the implementation of the reading and writing programs
  • Review the mathematics program in the elementary schools

Student Services, Special Education, and Health and Safety

  • Devise a plan to reduce absences at the elementary school level
  • Devise a plan to reduce absences at the middle school level
  • Devise a plan to reduce absences at the high school level
  • Develop an alternative program for some students expelled by the Board for serious offenses
  • Continue the development of a comprehensive drug and alcohol intervention plan

Administration

  • Update job descriptions for positions listed in the policy manual
  • Appraise the effectiveness of all evaluation instruments utilized within the division.
  • Create an evaluation instrument for media specialists
  • Review the evaluation of instructional personnel with regard to the frequency of observations and evaluations
  • Review the evaluation of administrative personnel
  • Develop a student record management plan for retaining and safeguarding students' records in long-term storage

Finance

  • Devise a separate salary schedule for administrators
  • Develop a multi-year plan to equalize monetary increments among teacher pay scale steps
  • Develop a five-year plan to bring teacher and administrator compensation to competitive levels
  • Explore additional ways to lower health insurance and other administrative costs

Technology

  • Devise a three-year plan for both the purchase of additional hardware and software and the training of personnel.
  • Enhance communication with parents and the community through the Bristol Television Network and the division's web site.
  • Improve security and supervision at the high school level.

Corporate and Community Involvement

  • Continue all channels of communication with the community, such as Board listening sessions and electronic communication
  • Improve public relations through the division web site and Communique newsletter

Facilities

  • Formation of an action team, which includes School Board, City Council and community representatives, to investigate the financing and the building of a new high school track
