| Read a variety of materials, non-fiction and fiction.
Non-fiction can include books, magazines, and textbooks. Select a time for reading so you will not be rushed. Read for at least 15-20 minutes or more per day. REMEMBER- "The more you read the better reader you become". Practice, practice, practice. Remembering and understanding are the foundation levels in comprehension. All levels begin here, but the goal is for students to perform at higher levels of comprehension such as solving, and analyzing materials. Grocery shopping can be hectic but it also can be a learning experience for children and can include strengthening skills in reading and math. Children can learn to read labels of food, how to measure the weight of items, and find different departments of the store where items can be found. Games and puzzles are excellent sources of learning. Children are motivated and interested when reading and math are incorporated into games. Math facts- such as simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division must be learned. This should be practiced daily and requires memorizing facts-flash cards and songs are excellent sources to help with memorization of facts.
