BIOGRAPHY AND  PHILOSOPHY

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William and Mary, and I earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from George Washington University.  I have a K-6 certification.  This is my fifth year at Van Pelt (one year I taught 1st grade), and before that I taught 3rd grade at Highland View and 2nd grade at Sullins Academy.  I have also worked as a traveling teacher for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, and I coached gymnastics for many years.  My goal in teaching is to make learning an enjoyable experience and to help children become lifelong learners.

During the day, I am usually working with the students, but if you leave a message, I will return your call as soon as possible (usually during activity period or lunch, or after students are dismissed).  When leaving a message, please briefly describe what you wish to discuss, so I can have the pertinent information available when I return your call.

We also communicate through the Agenda.  Please check and sign the agenda daily.

Policies and Classroom Expectations:

All graded work should come home with the students on Fridays in the Friday folder.  If I have seen / graded it, it will have a grade, comments, or a check mark in red pen.  If it does not have one of these, it is probably a page which needs to be completed and returned.  Please keep all graded work until the end of the six weeks, so that if there is any question about the grade it will be available for reference.

Language Arts Homework:
              1.  Students should read approximately 15 minutes each night.
              2.  Spelling and Vocabulary assignments will be given each Monday for the coming week.  These assignments are activities designed to give the students practice using these words so
as to prepare them for the tests.  These grades will also count for homework / participation.
              3.  We will be doing Daily Reading Reviews each night.  Students will be given a reading passage and weekly worksheet on Mondays, and there are 4 questions to complete each night.
This sheet needs to be completed and returned daily, as we will be checking them in class.
              4.  We do several activities in class each day.  Students who do not finish work in class may need to bring those papers home to complete.

I will notify you by a note in the agenda if homework is not being turned in.  Work which is turned in late will receive a late grade (10 points off).  Each assignment turned in incomplete or not turned in will lower the homework grade.

Accelerated Reading—Students will have some time to read and take tests in class.  Each student will have a points goal based on their reading level.  Bonus points toward the reading grade may be given for Accelerated Reader, but it will not count against the students if they do not meet the goal.
