What is Fluency?
  • Stuttering is a communication disorder that affects the flow of speech.
  • Stuttering is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds.  Speech Pathologists refer to these disruptions as dysfluencies.
  • Stuttered speech often indicates repetitions of words or parts of words, blocks on words, as well as prolongations of speech sounds.

.Things TO DO when listening to a stutterer:

  • Give them the time they need to say what they want to say.
  • Let them finish their sentences and fill in their words.

Things NOT to do when listening to a stutterer:

  • Don't look away during moments of stuttering.
  • Don't interrupt the speaker or fill in words.
  • Don't not talk to those who stutter.
  • Don't remind them to "slow down", "relax" or "take a deep breath"
