Children begin each day working in their journals.  At the beginning of the year, children draw pictures and dictate stories about their pictures.  As the year progresses, children begin to write their own stories using phonetically spelled words.

Children are involved in a variety of activities during the calendar math meeting.  They review the calendar daily, discuss patterns, recognize money, estimate, tell time, graph,  discuss the weather and the temperature and participate in SMARTBoard activities.

Saxon Phonics is an intense phonics program which consist of four lessons for each letter of the alphabet.  Each lesson begins with an alphabet activity, followed by a phonemic awareness activity, daily review of letters and their sounds and a worksheet which reviews the letter of the week.  Children learn to code vowels in three letter words and begin to sound out three and four letter words.  Decodable readers allow children to practice the skills taught during the daily lessons.

Center Time consist of some free activity centers and some teacher directed centers.  Children rotate from one center to the next center over an eight day period.  During this rotation, each child completes activities which coordinate with the theme unit for the two weeks.  Themes are coordinated with the Houghton Mifflin Reading series used by our school system.  Seasonal and holiday activities are also used during center time.

Language Arts is the time used to introduce new themes by using the shared reading activities in the Houghton Mifflin Reading series.  This time is also used to discuss Nursery Rhymes or read other books related to each theme.

The adopted Math text is Scott Foresman Kindergarten Math. This series correlates to the Virginia Standards of Learning for Kindergarten Mathmatics. This series is supplement with the Saxon Math program used in previous years.  Saxon Math is a success-oriented program that enables all children to develop a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts of all areas of mathematics.  The lessons are presented in increments with time provided between each increment for practice.
