*** Don’t forget Family Math Night this Thursday at 6:00 pm.

Hope everyone enjoyed their winter break and President’s Day off from school.  This week we will continue to learn about Washington and Lincoln and their contributions to our country.  Students will make a log cabin like Lincoln’s.  I will send home a study guide Thursday for our test next week on Washington, Lincoln, George Washington Carver and Ben Franklin.  We will also be doing sorting activities and projects throughout this week to distinguish between the accomplishments of each of these American contributors.  (SOL 1.2, 1.3)

In Reading, we will begin a new unit about sharing and working together.  This week we will read That Toad is Mine!, Tops and Bottoms, and the poems Hug O’ War  & Sharing.  We will write a class opinion about a character in Tops and Bottoms and then students will write an individual opinion about another character from the story.  Students will also use descriptive words when writing about Lincoln and Washington.  (SOL’s 1.8, 1.9, 1.12)

In Phonics, we will be working on diphthongs oi and oy.  We will also learn the dropping rule.  (SOL 1.4, 1.6).  Our spelling test will be Friday so please continue to encourage your child to study their words.  This helps them in their writing and reading.

In math, students will determine if a number is even or odd.  They will also identify ordinal positions of first through tenth.  We will review this chapter on counting to a hundred and place value on Thursday and our chapter test will be on Friday.  (SOL 1.1, 1.3, 1.5)

**** Our Science Fair projects will be due in 3 weeks (March 9th).  Please be working on these so it is not a stressful project.  Everyone will receive a science grade for their project.  Remember that each project needs to be displayed neatly and include a write-up to include Materials Used, Process, Observations and Conclusions of the project.  This can be typed or hand written and must accompany the project.  (I do think the handwritten projects do better in the judging.)  Thank you for helping your children with their projects.
